Congratulations to our 2019 grant winners

Code Nation equips students in under-resourced high schools with the skills, experiences, and connections that together create access to careers in technology.

The Foundation’s grant will support Code Nation’s free coding education and career preparation programs in high schools. Code Nation’s long-term goal is for 60% of alumni to secure a high-earning career in the tech sector.

Pivotal supports foster youth in obtaining the additional education and career support they need to achieve self-reliance.

The Foundation’s grant will support Pivotal’s “Path to Self-Sufficiency for Foster Youth Program.” The program seeks to provide academic and employment coaching to over 300 high school and college students, and prepare and place 115 foster youth into paid summer internships.

African Entrepreneur Collective (AEC) provides training focused on business development and debt financing for refugee entrepreneurs in East Africa to drive economic growth within their communities.

The Foundation’s grant will help AEC expand its programs to serve 9,200 refugees in Rwanda and increase loan capabilities.

What are essential grant application eligibility requirements?
  • Have a minimum two-year operating history after receiving its 501(c)(3) classification or international equivalency
  • Have audited financial statements for the past two completed fiscal years 
  • Be eligible to accept funds from a US foundation in accordance with US laws and the laws of your country
I previously received grant support from the foundation. Can I still apply for funding, even in a subsequent year?

Prior Upwork Foundation grant recipients must submit a separate application to be considered for additional grant opportunities.

Will the foundation provide specific feedback for grant applications that have been denied support?

The Foundation understands the need for feedback; however, due to an overwhelming number of applicants, we are currently unable to provide individualized feedback. We are continually working towards improving our processes to better serve applying organizations.

Exclusion criteria: what we do not fund
  • Donations or grants directly to individuals
  • Requests that do not fall under any of your programs/funding priorities 
  • Projects that exclusively serve religious purposes
  • Political campaigns and legislative lobbying efforts
  • Health initiatives 
  • Building or capital campaigns
  • Organizations whose values or mission are in conflict with those of Upwork
  • Sponsorship of events
  • Litigation efforts
